The two political stages of the Argentine MIR (Praxis) (1955-1964)

In this article, we will provide a concise overview of the history of the Movimiento Izquierda Revolucionaria (Praxis) of Argentina, focusing on the nature of its political and ideological stances. We will concentrate, in particular, on identifying the two distinct phases it went through: the first, from 1955 to 1960, characterized by a Marxist-Leninist perspective close to Trotskyism; and the second, from 1960 to 1964, marked by a left-wing nationalist orientation. We will argue that this organization’s shift was determined by the influence of Chinese Maoism and, above all, Cuban Castroism, but also by the emergence of radicalized factions within the major Argentine political parties, particularly within Peronism.

MIR of Venezuela: Anatomy of a Revolutionary Movement

Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria was a political episode that modified the Venezuelan political framework. A political framework under construction. Fruit of the revolutionary effervescence of the sixties in Latin America, this young, leftist and revolutionary party was an expression of the historical moment it experienced. This article analyzes not only the emergence of the party, but also its ideological positions, its relations with other actors and the frustrations inherited from the guerrilla stage.

The MIR of Peru: an Organization Conceived to Start the Armed Struggle (1959-1965)

This article describes the rise of the Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria in Peru, from its beginnings as a small split from APRA until its military defeat in 1965. It addresses the context in which it emerged, with emphasis on the peasant movement; its theoretical conceptions; and the preparation and development of the guerrilla struggle. We argue that the organization was conceived to initiate the armed struggle in Peru. For the preparation of this paper, we used bibliographic sources and interviews with former militants of the organization. We conclude that the preconception to initiate the guerrilla struggle was precisely one of the factors that caused its military defeat.

A New Marxism in Brazil? The Trajectory of Polop (1961-1967)

The Organização Revolucionária Marxista Política Operária (Polop) is often seen as a pioneer in the theoretical overcoming of Stalinism and in the renewal of Marxism in Brazil, the starting point of the “new left” in Brazil. This article contextualizes and exposes, in a synthetic way, the Polop trajectory and recovers the process of elaboration of its theses presented as innovative. By examining its trajectory, on the one hand, we relativize the idea of its theoretical pioneerism and, on the other hand, we highlight innovative aspects in the praxis of the organization that have not been studied much.

History and Historiography of the Revolutionary Left Movement of Chile (1965-1973)

This article seeks to explore some of the main milestones of the Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria (MIR), with special emphasis on the period of its founding and party construction (1965-1969). It will review both national and international contexts, some organizational and personal trajectories that explain the birth and early development of the MIR, the ideological influences, as well as the organizational and generational changes within the party. The objective is also to present the historiographical reforms that have explained the MIR as a point of arrival, rather than a point of departure, of the Chilean “new left”. Finally, some works that have renewed its history will be presented, particularly within the context of the Unidad Popular (UP).

Leading the Way: Socialism and Feminism in Raquel Messina

Raquel Messina (1872-1937), by merging socialism and feminism, aimed at the organization and unity of women in Argentina at a very early period of the women’s movement. In her view, socialism was the only movement that could liberate women from class oppressions; and feminism was concerned with their women’s infringed rights. Our work analyses her written documents in order to make them visible and also to problematize the debates around “women’s question” in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Female leadership and feminism in Argentine socialism (1902-1955)

This article aims to analyze the female leadership that emerged in the Socialist Party from the intersection of three axes: evolution of the party instances, the mutation of slogans and program and the socio-personal vicissitudes of the protagonists. The article defends the thesis of an important change after 1945.

Dialogue on the publication of Marxism and the Oppression of Women: Towards a Unitary Theory by Lise Vogel

In 2024, in a co-edition between CEHTI and Ediciones IPS in Argentina, Bellaterra in Barcelona, and Proyección in Chile, Lise Vogel's Marxism and the Oppression of Women: Towards a Unitary Theory was published for the first time in Spanish. This book, first published in 1983, lays the foundations for what is now known as Social Reproduction Theory. In this dossier, we invite Corina Rodríguez Enríquez, Verónica Gago, and Paula Varela to reflect on the book and its contributions to contemporary feminist debates.
